About Health Access:

A nonprofit organization dedicated to achieving quality, affordable health care for all Californians, Health Access is the state-wide health care consumer advocacy coalition of organizations representing seniors, children, people with disabilities, immigrants, communities of color, health care professionals, people of faith, labor, and working families. For over 30 years, Health Access has been a leader in the state’s health care reform movement, most recently as the lead coalition working to pass, implement, improve and defend the Affordable Care Act in California. Health Access was the leading sponsor of the California HMO Patient Bill of Rights, the Hospital Fair Pricing Act, coverage expansions including opening Medi-Cal to all income-eligible children regardless of immigration status, and best-in-nation consumer protections on timely access to care, surprise medical bills, and prescription drug prices.

Description of the Health Access Internship Program

Health Access interns are an integral part of the Health Access Policy team. Under the mentorship of the Policy and Legislative Advocate, Health Access interns assist the policy team

Internship duties and responsibilities may include:

• Policy Research on Health Access’ policy priorities
• Participating in weekly policy team and staff meetings
• Assisting in tracking legislation
• Attending legislative committees
• Attending state administrative stakeholder meetings

Interns can expect:

• Ownership in the development and writing of at least one position letter for a legislative bill currently in process
• Education and guidance on the California state Legislative and Budget process
• Opportunities to contribute to Health Access’ policy priories and goals

Qualifications:

• Applicants must be actively enrolled in an undergraduate program
• Interest in health policy or public policy
• Passionate about Health Access’ mission and vision
• Based in Sacramento

Internship Period

Health Access interns commit to working 15-20 hours per week, for a minimum of 10 weeks (one academic quarter). Health Access works with selected candidates to determine the hours and schedule that best meet the needs of Health Access and the intern. Extending the internship longer than the 10 weeks is possible. Internships will not exceed 12 months.

Compensation

Health Access Interns are paid $17.00 per hour. Health Access reimburses for travel-related costs when necessary. College credit may also be granted when it is arranged and approved by the course professor.
