See the DataCongress has proposed major cuts to federal programs, including Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) and Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces like Covered California. Republicans have narrow majorities in both the Senate and the House, with 53 Republicans in the Senate and 220 (or fewer with potential Cabinet appointees) in the House. Republicans have said they will seek to pass budget cuts through what’s known as “the reconciliation process” which can be done without bipartisan support. Under current congressional rules, other changes such as repealing the ACA consumer protections (like coverage of pre-existing conditions) requires bipartisan support and 60 votes in the U.S. Senate.
Read the reportMedicaid, or Medi-Cal in California, is a lifeline for over 15 million Californians, providing essential care to families, seniors, and children. Proposed cuts by congress would strip away this vital support, force clinics to close, and drive-up health care costs for everyone in order to give tax breaks to billionaires and corporations.
Congress needs to hear from you now: Hands off Medicaid! Send a letter to your member of Congress today and demand they protect the care millions depend on.
Write a LetterFrom the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), federal action has fundamentally changed our health care system, expanding coverage and lowering costs for millions of Californians. But each region of our large state is impacted differently. Health Access has new reports that focus in on the health care impacts of these actions in four regions in our state: The Central Valley, Riverside County, Orange County, and Los Angeles County.
Each report details the number of people who have gotten coverage, the amount of savings they are receiving, and what could happen if part or all of these actions are rolled back.
View reportsThe Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), passed in 2022, extended and expanded financial help for health care premiums for those enrolled in Covered California. The IRA also implemented prescription drug price negotiation and insulin cost caps for Medicare. All of this is built upon the strong foundation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), passed in 2010. This report details Covered California and Medicare enrollment by California congressional district with the best and most recent available estimates, identifying the number of people in each district that are impacted by these policies, and what they stand to lose if they are not made permanent.
