Quality, Affordable Health Care for ALL Californians.
HEALTH ACCESS CALIFORNIA is the statewide health care consumer advocacy coalition, advocating for quality, affordable health care for all Californians.
As a coalition organization representing consumer groups, communities of color, immigrants, people with disabilities, children, seniors, women, people of faith, and organized labor. Health Access seeks to connect grassroots organizing to policy work, on-the-ground mobilization with savvy Sacramento strategy. Coalition member organizations can count on Health Access for timely analysis and tools so that whatever time and effort they have for health advocacy is spent in the most effective way possible.
HEALTH ACCESS FOUNDATION undertakes community organizing and education, research and policy analysis, and advocacy to benefit health care consumers, both insured and uninsured.
Working together, these two organizations are the leading coalition voice for health care consumers in California. We represent consumers—insured, uninsured, under-insured—at the California Legislature, at administrative and regulatory agencies, in the media, and in public forums. The health care industry, from insurers to drug companies to doctors and hospitals, are well-represented at the Capitol. Health Access ensures that health care consumers are also represented in these critical policy discussions.
With offices in Sacramento, Oakland, and Los Angeles, Health Access serves a statewide constituency.
Health Access has a long history of fighting – and winning – policy battles against HMOs that deny care, prescription drug companies that price gouge, providers that overcharge the uninsured, as well as employers that don’t provide health care coverage for their workers. Health Access has played a key role leading the movement for health care reform in California. We led the Health Care for America Now campaign in California to pass the Affordable Care Act and subsequent efforts to implement and improve upon it, at the state and local level. We continue to work to ensure timely access to care among other consumer protections; additional reforms to cover the remaining uninsured; and by building a stronger health care safety-net, at the county, state and federal level.
Our Core Mission
- Preserving access to care –Health Access has been a leader in the budget battles of the last decade, working to protect and improve public health coverage programs like Medicaid (Medi-Cal), Medicare, and safety-net institutions while fighting for the funding they need to survive and thrive.
- Protecting patients – Health Access develops and advocates for strong consumer protections so Californians can have confidence in their care and coverage and to stop insurers or providers from denying care or overcharging for it. Focusing on cost, quality, and access, we pursue a strategic combination of administrative advocacy, legislative campaigns and public education,
- Expanding coverage and winning comprehensive health reform – Health Access has, since its inception, been focused on expanding health coverage whether though public programs, employer-based benefits, or universal, single-payer reforms. Health Access has won comprehensive health reform at the state and federal level and is committed to implementing and improving upon the Affordable Care Act and ultimately achieving quality, affordable health care for all Californians.
