5 Ways You Can Help Protect California’s Health Care

The proposals by President-elect Donald Trump, and the Republican leadership of both houses of Congress, threaten health coverage for millions of Americans and the progress we’ve made in the last half-century with the enactment of Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), especially in California.

Dramatic rollbacks in health care and coverage are at the top of the agenda of both President-elect Trump and Speaker Paul Ryan, who re-committed to his longstanding plan of dramatic funding cuts to Medicaid and Medicare. Many of those changes, as well as repeal of many (but not all) elements of the Affordable Care Act, could be passed through “budget reconciliation”, which only requires 51 votes in the Senate, a majority vote of the House, and the President’s signature. This could be done in the first weeks of a Trump Administration so we need to act quickly!

Here are five things you can do to help right now:

  1. Learn more: Health Access has put together a fact sheet about what is at risk for health care. It details the millions of Californians who could lose coverage, and the billions of dollars at stake for California.
  2. Continue to enroll: In these tough times, make sure you, your friends, and your family practice self-care and get insured. Take advantage of open enrollment to get coverage through Covered California or Medi-Cal.
  3. Tell us your story: We continue to collect stories about how you or a loved one has benefited from the Affordable Care Act, Medi-Cal, or any other public health care program. Please fill out our survey and share your story.
  4. Take action: Call your congressional member tell them how much the Affordable Care Act, Medi-Cal, and Medicare mean to you and your family. You can also plan a health rally in your community. Find out more about the rally that was recently hosted in Los Angeles.
  5. Join the discussion: You are invited to Health Access’ 30th Anniversary event on December 13, 2016 in Sacramento. The focus will be on how to protect California’s progress on health care and health reform with featured speakers including:
    • Secretary Diana S. Dooley, California Health and Human Services Agency
    • Senator Ed Hernandez, Chair, California State Senate Health Committee
    • Peter Lee, Executive Director, Covered California
