For those who doubt it possible for insurance premium rates to actually decrease, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius has news for you! In a teleconference this morning, Secretary Sebelius announced the lowering of rates in the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) in many states. PCIP covers those individuals who have been denied health coverage due to pre-existing conditions. The Affordable Care Act outlawed such denials for children starting January 1, 2011, and starting in 2014 for adults.
Those currently enrolled in California’s PCIP program should have seen a lower premium in their May 2011 statement, and those who may have been discouraged from applying due to costs, should take a look at the new premium chart.
