In a day of ceremony, as legislators got sworn in yesterday for a new two-year term, there was some news about Senators in new leadership positions:
Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) is the new chair of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee, replacing the termed-out former Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny. While she will be sorely missed, Chairman Leno’s skills and leadership on the top issue of the year is greatly welcomed.
Senator Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina) is the new chair of the Senate Health Committee, replacing Senator Elaine Alquist, who will now serve on the powerful Rules Committee. Senator Alquist was a great ally of consumers, authoring many key bills, especially to implement and improve health reform in the past year, and we expect her to continue that work. We look forward to working with Chairman Hernandez, an optometrist and a legislator active in health issues from his first year in the Assembly, in his new and important role.
We expect more news, including specific committee assignments, in the weeks to come…
