Bit by COBRA….

As people lose employment, we’ve discussed how important COBRA is to make sure people continue to get group coverage and group rates, and are not at risk of being denied for “pre-existing conditions.”

But it’s a tough option for many. A new Families USA report calculates that the cost of coverage in California under COBRA would typically be huge 29% of unemployment benefits for an individual, and a unfathomable 82% for a family.

Even The Onion couldn’t make it more absurd, even though they tried.

It’s gratifying that, as my colleague Beth Capell reports, that helping the newly unemployed with Medicaid expansions and COBRA subsidies is a top priority in the proposed economic recovery package.
